The Fumbler has had it up to here with the length of the football season. He is staging his own personal protest by staying home for the first time since 1990. Why can't the PIAA figure out how to get this thing over with earlier? The ridiculous thing is the PIAA left the length of the football season as it is, but cut out a week of winter sports starting in 2008.
How is it that Ohio finished its state playoffs two weeks ago, but Pennsylvania's last until mid-December? And get this: In 2009, the PIAA football championships will be Dec. 18-19.
But as the season drags on, The Fumbler stays hot. He was 7-1 in semifinal picks last week, which brought his postseason record to 64-11 (.853 percentage). He is 15-1 the past three weeks. His record for the season is 542-128 (.809 percentage).
Here are his thoughts on all four championship games, which will be played at Hersheypark Stadium. He sees the WPIAL winning three of four titles:
Class AAAA
Central Catholic (15-0) vs. Parkland (15-0), 5 p.m. tomorrow -- Central Catholic's offense sputtered last week in a 14-6 victory against Harrisburg. Don't look for a lot of points from Central Catholic's offense this week, either. But Central Catholic's defense always is solid -- and that is the reason the Vikings will win their third PIAA title since the playoffs started in 1988. Winner: Central Catholic.
Class AAA
Thomas Jefferson (15-0) vs. Garnet Valley (13-1), 7 p.m. today -- It seems everyone is ready to hand Thomas Jefferson the championship trophy. Hold on, The Fumbler says. Garnet Valley comes from District 1 (suburban Philadelphia), and that district has been known to produce some pretty good teams. The key to the game will be how well Garnet Valley stands up to Thomas Jefferson's offensive and defensive lines. Winner: Thomas Jefferson.
Class AA
Jeannette (15-0) vs. Dunmore (14-1), noon tomorrow -- Since the PIAA playoffs started, no WPIAL team has been more of a lock to win the title than Jeannette. Barring a snowstorm that neutralizes Terrelle Pryor, Jeannette will win by at least three touchdowns. Winner: Jeannette.
Class A
Serra (15-0) vs. Steelton-Highspire (12-3), 1 p.m. today -- This is the first of the four championship games. The Fumbler does not see the weekend getting off to a good start for the WPIAL. He thinks Steelton-Highspire running back Jeremiah Young and that big offensive line might be a little too much for Serra. Winner: Steelton-Highspire.
