Monday, March 10, 2008

The defending Northeast Conference champion Robert Morris Colonials are headed back to the league's title game thanks to a record performance from NEC player of the year Sade Logan.

Logan, a junior guard, broke one tournament mark and tied another in the No. 2 Colonials' 67-52 victory against sixth-seeded Monmouth at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Logan, who transferred from Chattanooga State, had 38 points, which ties the third-highest single-game output in the 22 years of the NEC tournament. Logan, Division I's second-leading scorer, tied a tournament record for field goals made with a 15-of-30 performance, including seven 3-pointers.

• Fourth-seeded Long Island overcame 37 points from Erin Kerner of Erie to reach its first tournament championship game since 2002, downing top-seeded Quinnipiac, 67-63, in the other semifinal.

Other tournaments

Big Ten: Purdue's Lakisha Freeman grabbed her own rebound with a second left and beat the buzzer with a 10-foot jumper, giving the third-seeded Boilermakers (18-14) a 58-56 victory against Illinois (19-14) in the championship in Indianapolis. Freeman finished with 12 points. Illinois was led by Jenna Smith with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Atlantic Coast: For the second day in a row, North Carolina celebrated an ACC championship at the expense of its biggest rival. Erlana Larkins and Cetera DeGraffenreid each scored 17 points to help the second-ranked Tar Heels (30-2) beat No. 12 Duke (23-9), 86-73, in the tournament championship in Greensboro, N.C., giving North Carolina its fourth consecutive title while almost certainly locking up a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Southeastern: Candace Parker hit a jumper with 1:57 left that put No. 3-ranked Tennessee (30-2) ahead to stay, and the Lady Vols won their record 13th SEC title and third in four years by beating No. 7 LSU (27-5), 61-55. Parker led with 28 points.

Conference USA: Brittany Gilliam scored 20 points and Sharee Shepherd added 17 as Southern Methodist (24-8) upset No. 18 UTEP (27-3), 73-57, to win the tournament in Orlando, Fla. The victory sends SMU to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2000. UTEP watched Division I's longest winning streak end at 23 games, but the Miners are still likely to receive their first bid to the NCAA tournament as an at-large selection.

West Coast: Morgan Henderson scored 20 points, hitting six 3-pointers, and Kiva Herman added 16 to lead host San Diego (19-12) to a 70-66 upset of top-seeded Gonzaga (24-8) in the championship. The Toreros took a 17-point first-half lead and snapped a 12-game losing streak against the Bulldogs.

Metro Atlantic Athletic: Rachele Fitz scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half and No. 24 Marist (31-2) won its 21st consecutive game, beating Iona (18-13), 83-63, to win the championship in Albany, N.Y.
