The streak lives for the Duquesne baseball team.
The 11-10 Dukes are the streakiest team in Division I and currently own the third-longest winning streak in the country at 11 behind UNC-Wilmington's 20 and Wichita State's 17. Duquesne extended its streak against Division I opponents to a school-record 11 with a 5-4 victory yesterday against visiting Ohio University.
Catcher Derek Mechling was 2 for 4 with a three-run home run to lead the Dukes, whose 11-game winning streak is the school's longest since 1981 when Duquesne won 12 in a row against Division II and III competition.
Duquesne swept a three-game series against St. Bonaventure last weekend to move into a tie for first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference at 6-0 with nationally ranked Charlotte.
Charlotte is 23rd in the latest Collegiate Baseball Top 30 poll.
Duquesne has been on a roll since losing all 10 games on separate road trips to open the season.
The Dukes play today at Youngstown State and return to A-10 action with a three-game weekend series at Rhode Island.
Mike Carroll, a junior catcher, leads Duquesne with a .377 average to go with 12 RBIs, and outfielder Eric Morrison has two home runs and a team-high 13 RBIs.
Ryan Juran (3-3, 7.90 ERA) and Paul Bugajski (3-3, 9.19) have emerged as the most consistent pitchers on the staff.
A look at the other Division I teams in the district:
Pitt (8-13, 2-4) started to turn things around by taking two of three against Louisville in the Big East last weekend after dropping all three games at West Virginia a couple weeks ago.
The Panthers play host to Kent State today and then have three Big East games at Seton Hall this weekend.
The Panthers feature Sean Conley, a senior outfielder from Blackhawk who leads the team with a .363 average, 6 home runs and 29 RBIs. Sophomore shortstop Danny Lopez is next at .325 with 3 home runs and 15 RBIs.
The two biggest winners on the staff are Brian Chrisman (3-2, 3.58) and Nate Reed (3-3, 8.12.)
West Virginia (20-6, 4-2) has constructed its gaudy record with a team batting average of .351, led by Justin Parks (.465, 2 HRs, 28 RBIs) and Jedd Gyorsko (.435, 4 HRs, 33 RBIs). The Mountaineers are 14-1 at home.
Billy Gross (4-0, 2.13 ERA), Stephen Morrison (4-1, 2.28) and Josh Whitlock (5-1, 3.51) lead the pitchers.
The Mountaineers have a three-game Big East series at home against South Florida this weekend.
Penn State junior right-hander Drew O'Neill had two saves in a recent four-game Big Ten series against Ohio State to become the school's all-time leader with 16. For the season, O'Neill is 0-1 with five saves and a 0.96 ERA.
The Nittany Lions (7-14, 2-2) are led in hitting by Brian Ernst (.337) and Joe Blackburn (.328) and pitching by Mike Lorenston (3-2, 5.40) and Mike Wannamaker (2-2, 2.75).
Penn State entertains Michigan this weekend.
IUP (19-8, 3-1) and California (11-7, 3-1) are tied atop the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West.
IUP's marquee players are Shawn Schwarz (.433, 2 HRs, 25 RBIs), a senior first baseman/outfielder from Kiski Area, and Dan Snyder (5-0, 2.56), a senior right-hander from Indiana, Pa. California's headliners are Robert Hedrick (.397, 3 HRs, 11 RBIs) and pitchers Randy Sturgill (2-0, 1.98) and Jay Mitaly (2-0, 5.79).
