Friday, April 18, 2008

Lake Erie: Steelhead action in recent days has been better on Ohio tributaries than in Pennsylvania, where fish are thinning out. Yesterday, lower Walnut Creek was holding a few fish. So were some of the holes in upper Elk Creek, although water has been low. Upper Elk was stocked with brown trout this week and lower Elk will be stocked next Wednesday. The lagoons of Presque Isle Bay have been yielding very good catches of crappies.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Bluegills and crappies continue to hit in the shallow waters around Sheakleyvillle Bridge, especially just before and after dark. Water on the east side has warmed up faster than the rest of the lake and was yielding crappies, bluegills and some largemouth bass last week.

Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County): The crappie bite has picked up in warming water temperatures. Anglers have been finding them a little shallower than in recent weeks. Releases from the dam raised water levels in recent days. The tailrace was stocked Wednesday.

Little Shenango River (Mercer County): Alyson Streiff, 11, caught four 12-inch brown trout on crawlers on opening day, fishing in Greenville with her father, Thomas Streiff.

Oil Creek, Sugar Creek, Pine Creek, Caldwell Creek (Crawford, Venango counties): Water was in good shape yesterday, much better than opening weekend. Fish are being caught mostly on subsurface presentations but are starting to look up. Hatches include Blue Quill, Quill Gordon and Early Black Stoneflies.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): This is a good springtime fishery and action has picked up in recent days on several species, mostly in the warm water of the shallow bays. Walleyes averaging 20 inches, but up to 30 inches, are reported. Crappies, numbers of largemouth bass and nice-size perch also are reported. A couple of anglers have reported successfully trolling for muskies.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Nice catches of crappies, including some slabs, are reported. Anglers also are releasing numbers of largemouth bass. The north shore and the old Route 422 launch area have been yielding perch.

Allegheny River: Walleyes and a few saugers are being released at the mouth of Deer Creek. Anglers are also releasing walleyes at the power plant in Cheswick.

Deer Creek (Allegheny County): Excellent catches of trout were reported in recent days.

Monongahela River: The Point Marion and Gray's Landing areas have been yielding nice releases of walleyes, saugers and channel catfish in recent days.

Ohio, Beaver rivers: Marcus Boyd of New Cumberland, W.Va., won Saturday's Chester Newell Sportsmen's Club catfish tournament with a 27-inch catch. Next tournament is 7 p.m.-7 a.m. April 26, 304-387-3982. Some nice releases of walleyes are being made at the dams. Muskie catches were reported on the Beaver River last week.

Montour Run (Allegheny County): Mike Jonnet of Crescent caught a 23-inch, 3-pound 9-ounce golden rainbow trout on a wax worm opening day. Eric Cersosimo, 15, of Aliquippa, caught a 24-inch, 6-pound, 3-ounce rainbow trout on a minnow opening day.

Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): Walleyes, smallmouth bass and big northern pike have been hitting from boat and shore, mostly in the shallower waters.

Youghiogheny River/Meadow Run (Fayette County): River conditions are very good, but Meadow Run and other tributaries are running low. Stockings this week brought many anglers to the water.

Dunlap Creek Lake (Fayette County): Kayla Rugola, 7, of Thompson caught a 21-inch golden rainbow Monday in the children's pond, which is open to kids 12 and under until June. Johnnie Bohna of East Millsboro boated a 20-inch golden rainbow opening day. The Dunlap Co-op Stocking Club will stock trout over 14 inches tomorrow and the Fish and Boat Commission will stock again April 26.

Loyalhanna Creek (Westmoreland County): Gary Walthour of North Huntington landed a nearly 1012-pound, 30-inch golden rainbow with 18??-inch girth on a crawler in the lower reaches Sunday. Water was low and cold yesterday.

Penn's Creek (Snyder County): Lots of dry fly action is reported in low but cold water that has been on fire with Grannom and Hendrickson hatches.

Little Juniata River (Huntingdon County): Grannoms started coming off Wednesday, and lots of surface activity is reported.

Spring Creek (Centre County): Blue-Winged Olives have begun dwindling on this limestone stream. Anglers are fishing mostly nymphs.

Maumee River (Ohio): Jamie Gordon of Elliot won a recent walleye contest, sponsored by Maumee Tackle Shop, with 2718-inch jack (male walleye). The shop discourages the killing of female walleyes on this river, which is famous for its spring runs.
