What to do: After dogs, goats were among the first animals domesticated by man. Caprine Companions, a Potter County outfitter, organizes pack-goat trips on Pennsylvania's rugged northern tier. On day adventures, customers hike 4-5 miles while the sturdy goats carry water, lunch and other gear. Hikes are 5-10 miles on overnight trips, and the goats -- capable of carrying up to 1/3 of their weight -- pack in tents, food, sleeping gear, etc., freeing hikers to take in the scenery or photograph the Pennsylvania Wilds. Based at Carter Camp Lodge, which was founded as a coach stop in the 1850s and has been refurbished as a bed and breakfast.
