On Deck: April 28 - May 4
A sports day planner for the week ahead
Sunday, April 27, 2008
Monday

Pirates: The locals make their final visit to Shea Stadium, beginning a three-game series against the New York Mets with a doozy of a pitching matchup: Ian Snell vs. Johan Santana.

Did you know: The Pirates played the Mets in the first game at Shea, April 17, 1964 -- a 4-3 Pirates win. Willie Stargell had the first hit, a homer off Jack Fisher to help make a winner of Bob Friend.

To watch: 7:10 p.m., FSN Pittsburgh.

Tuesday

Penguins: Game 3: The Eastern Conference semifinal series shifts to Madison Square Garden, where the Penguins haven't won in regulation since Oct. 12, 2006 -- a 6-5 win in which Sidney Crosby scored with 3.3 seconds to play to win it.

Did you know: Including two assists in Game 1, Jaromir Jagr has scored 36 points (17 goals) against his former team since the Penguins traded him in 2001.

To watch: 7 p.m., FSN Pittsburgh.

Wednesday

NBA playoffs: King James & His Court, a.k.a. the Cleveland Cavaliers, lost in Game 3 vs. Washington, ensuring they return to Cleveland for Game 5 of their Eastern Conference first-round series.

Did you know: It must only seem that Cleveland's LeBron James raises his play to another level in the playoffs. For his career, he averages 27.4 points a game in the playoffs and 27.3 in the regular season.

To watch: TBA.

Thursday

Look what's new: How's this for scheduling? After saying farewell to Shea Stadium early in the week, the Pirates turn around and say hello for the first time to Nationals Park with the first of a four-game series in Washington.

Did you know: Xavier Nady's 23 RBIs through April 25 is the most by a Pirates hitter in April since Jeff King knocked in 23 in 1996. What's more, it puts him within striking distance of Willie Stargell's 27 in 1971.

To watch: 7:10 p.m., FSN Pittsburgh.

Friday

Baldwin Invitational: The 35th edition of the largest high school track and field competition this side of the PIAA championships returns. Last year, athletes from more than 100 schools participated.

Did you know: Baldwin's Ryan Schleicher is the only athlete in the WPIAL to exceed 200 feet in the javelin this season.

To watch: 12:30 p.m., Baldwin High School; running finals begin at 6:15 p.m.

Saturday

Kentucky Derby: The first Saturday in May means only one thing -- big hats, mint juleps and the 134th Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. The early favorite: Big Brown, whose odds have dropped to 3-1 after starting Derby prep season at 200-1.

Did you know: Big Brown, who will have Kent Desormeaux aboard, ran just two Derby prep races. In the past 60 years, only Sunny's Halo (1983) and Street Sense last year ran so few and went onto win the Derby.

To watch: 5 p.m., WPXI.

Sunday

Back home: Game 5: Who among us expects another sweep such as we witnessed vs. Ottawa? Plan on the Penguins and Rangers returning to Mellon Arena for Game 5 of their Eastern semifinal.

Did you know: Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist had a 1.87 GAA vs. the Penguins this season before giving up five to them in Game 1.

To watch: 2 p.m., WPXI.
