High School Roundup: West Mifflin earns 2-0 win
Titans slip by Trinity; stay perfect in section

West Mifflin didn't get much offense, but it got enough to sneak past visiting Trinity, 2-0, to clinch the WPIAL Class AAA Section 4 baseball championship yesterday.

The Titans (16-2, 13-0), the Post-Gazette's No. 4-ranked Class AAA team, scored runs in the second and sixth innings on their way to the win. West Mifflin also blanked Trinity (11-6, 9-3) in their first meeting of the season.

Brian Ripper had two hits in three at bats to lead the Titans. Mike Neckerman, backed by a solid defense, picked up the win despite recording only two strikeouts.

Other top baseball games

• Class AAA No. 1 West Allegheny (13-3, 10-1) routed visiting Chartiers Valley (10-6, 6-5), 10-0, in Section 3. Zak Sinclair struck out nine in a three-hit shutout. Sinclair also belted a two-run home run and drove in three runs for the Indians.

• Host Seneca Valley (16-2, 10-1), No. 1 in Class AAAA, slipped past Pine-Richland (10-9, 4-7), 3-1, in Section 1. Cory Mazzoni struck out 11 and gave up just one hit to pick up the win for the Raiders.

• Brian Billigen led off the bottom the first inning with a home run to jump-start Bishop Canevin (9-7, 9-4) in a 6-1 win against visiting North Catholic (9-9, 7-6) in Class AA Section 6. Billigen also struck out 11, picking up the pitching win. John Koziel also hit a first inning home run and drove in four for the Crusaders.

• Nick McGowin wiggled out of bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh, getting two ground-ball outs for host Blackhawk (10-4, 8-2) in an 11-10 Class AAA Section 1 win against No. 2 Hampton (13-4, 10-1). Matt Royle and Paul Kessler went 2 for 3 for Blackhawk.

• Class AAAA No. 4 Canon-McMillan clinched the Section 3 title with a come-from-behind 6-5 win at Bethel Park (10-8, 8-6). The Big Macs rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by Phil Stabb's two-run double. Stabb went 2 for 4 and had three RBIs. Mike Hull had three hits. Chris Douglas was the winning pitcher for Canon-McMillan.

It's not over ...

• Class AAA No. 5 Laurel Highlands (15-3, 11-1) was down to its final strike when Mason Tupta hit a two-run home run to tie its Section 2 game, 6-6, against visiting Derry (10-8, 8-5). Laurel Highlands went on to win, 8-7, in nine innings. Kevin Gmiter was the winning pitcher.

Going deep

Center (13-5, 9-4) belted four home runs in its 10-8 Class AA Section 1 win against visiting Avonworth (8-8, 6-7). Cory Wagner led the onslaught with two home runs and five RBIs.

• Dan Olszewski went 4 for 4 with two two-run home runs to pace Class AA No. 2 Burrell (14-1, 11-0) in a 9-6 Section 3 win at Apollo-Ridge (2-12, 1-10). Dave Kunkle and Phil Spagnolo hit home runs for the Bucs, who used four pitchers to notch the victory.

Perfect trio

Carson Seaman, Jess Tetkoski, and Aaron Retter all went 4 for 4 for Greensburg Central Catholic (14-3, 10-1) in its 17-0 four-inning Class AA Section thumping at East Allegheny (1-13, 0-11).

Softball highlight

• Rachelle Warnock of Carrick (9-5, 9-3) gave up just one hit and struck out 18 as the Raiders handed host Perry (9-3, 8-1) its first City League loss of the year, 1-0, in Section 1. Warnock did not walk a batter.
