U.S. Open qualifier delayed again
Wednesday, May 14, 2008

For the second day in a row, the 18-hole local qualifier for the U.S. Open was postponed and has been rescheduled for today at Tom's Run at Chestnut Ridge in Blairsville.

Because of the repeated delays, at least five players have dropped out of the qualifier, reducing the field to 27 players vying for two spots into a 36-hole sectional qualifier -- the last step on the road to the U.S. Open June 12-15 at Torrey Pines in LaJolla, Calif.

The qualifier was postponed again because Tom's Run has received 3 inches of rain in three days, leaving the course unplayable. If the course cannot drain in time, the qualifier will be moved to Indiana Country Club tomorrow, said Jeff Rivard, executive director of the West Penn Golf Association.

"It's not just a couple holes; the entire grounds are still wet," Rivard said.
