2 Woodland Hills tour buses in crash
Saturday, May 17, 2008

About a dozen students from Woodland Hills West Junior High School were injured yesterday when two tour buses carrying about 75 students collided on a highway near Washington, D.C.

None of the injuries was serious, but seven students were being treated at a hospital, according to The Associated Press.

The accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. at the beginning of a weekend school trip to the nation's capital. The first bus stopped short when a car cut in front of it on the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Then the second bus rear-ended the first bus, according to Don Hammonds, a Post-Gazette reporter whose 14-year-old son, Brent, is a student on the trip.

The first bus was disabled by the crash, and the door of the second bus was pinched closed and had to be opened by emergency workers, a police spokesman said.

The incident tied up rush-hour traffic for hours.

Mr. Hammonds said school officials planned to continue the trip, which is scheduled to run through tomorrow. He said he didn't know of any students who are coming home early.
