DIGITAL STEP BACKWARD

With a rotor on my rooftop antenna I can receive 12 analog stations. With the new converter boxes (I have tried two different models) I can reliably get two digital stations (Channels 2 and 53).

Write to us: To submit a letter or an essay for consideration for The Private Sector, please send it via e-mail to business@post-gazette.com or via regular mail to Post-Gazette Business Section, Private Sector, 34 Blvd. of the Allies, Pittsburgh 15222. Please include your telephone number, municipality and return address for verification.

By relocating my antenna and adding preamplifiers I can sometimes get more channels.

Unfortunately as the digital signals are extremely variable and the first thing to go out is the audio, these stations are unwatchable.

The situation at my hunting camp in McKean County is even worse. At this location I can pull in three VHF stations but will be unable to get any digital channels.

Your readers should be aware that they might have to purchase outdoor antennas with rotors and preamplifiers in addition to the converter box when switching to the new system. If they live more than 30 miles from a TV station, they will be lucky to get any reception at all.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the FCC (and probably the cable company lobbyists) for improving the number and quality of broadcast stations I can watch from 15 to two.

Cranberry
