It was a simple question, one that produced a quick response from Jim Wilson, head coach for the Pennsylvania squad in the 29th annual Penn-Ohio Football Classic.
Where was Wilson planning to play Beaver Area High School standout Manny Cutlip?
"Everywhere," Wilson said.
On the roster Cutlip, who is 6 feet 2 and 215 pounds, is listed as a wide receiver/defensive back. He'll be used mainly on offense in the contest against the Ohio All-Stars. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at West Branch High School in Beloit, Ohio.
Cutlip will probably start the game at wide receiver, but will also see time at quarterback and might even line up at running back.
"The coaches are going to try and use me the same way we did at Beaver," Cutlip said.
At Beaver last fall Cutlip rushed 79 times for 497 yards. He also completed 32 of 64 passes for 575 yards and five touchdowns.
He is one of three quarterbacks on the Pennsylvania team. Freedom's Shawn Lehocky, who passed for 1,456 yards and 11 scores his senior year, will start under center with Riverside's Codi Jackson, who also plays receiver, as the emergency third signal-caller.
Lehocky, who is headed for Westminster College, is an outstanding passer. Cutlip is just an outstanding athlete. He will attend IUP and play either linebacker or strong safety.
"The game plan right now has Manny running a package [of plays] we call 'MC Hammer'," Wilson said. "Manny's initials are MC and you can figure out the rest."
Cutlip, who will also be on the kick return and punt return teams, is looking forward to getting his hands on the ball.
"It's going to be fun," he said. "I've known a lot of the guys for a while from me hitting them and them hitting me. It's nice to be on the same side with them ... and coach is cool."
Lehocky and Cutlip are not the only offensive weapons Pennsylvania has. Wilson said Western Beaver's Shane Waida, who will attend Thiel, and New Brighton's Eric Walker, who is headed for Bethany, are talented running backs. So is Cornell's Keith Jackson, who is headed for Waynesburg.
Waida rushed 227 times for 1,368 yards and scored 20 touchdowns for the Golden Beavers. Walker gained 1,125 yards and scored 15 times for the Lions and Jackson gained 844 yards on 133 attempts for the Raiders.
At wide receiver, Lehocky will be looking for Cutlip, Blackhawk's Brooks Roorback, who is headed for Duquesne University, and tight end Kenny Cottman of Beaver Falls, who will be at Slippery Rock in the fall. Roorback had 539 yards in receptions in 2007, Cottman caught 20 passes for 490 yards and nine scores.
"Cottman is another one who can do anything," Wilson said. "He was just messing around punting the ball in practice and was booming it, and he throws it pretty well."
As good as the offense appears to be, the defense seems to be better. It is loaded with outstanding players such as Riverside's Jake Wickline, who will play at Edinboro, and Burgettstown's Dan Conley, a Saint Francis (Pa.) University recruit.
"When we started looking at things, I gave the defensive coaches the first choice of who they wanted," Wilson said. "That's why we don't have Wickline [a 4,000-yard career rusher] or Conley [a 6-1, 200-pound bruiser] on offense. If the other team can't score, we can't lose."
What Wilson likes the most about the group of players he has is their attitude. He said they hustle all the time and expects that to pay off late in the game.
"The last time I coached in this game was 2004 and there were a couple of guys who didn't play much and that bothered me," Wilson said. "They've put in the time and we want to make sure they get an opportunity to experience what it's like to play in the game. So, that's something we're also going to strive to do."
