Jaromir Jagr's career in the NHL might be over.
A Russian team, Avangard Omsk, announced on its Web site today that Jagr has agreed to a multi-year contract to play there.
The deal appears to cover two seasons and an option. Reports in Russia say it will pay Jagr as much as $35 million for the first two years.
He was an unrestricted free agent in the NHL and was informed by the New York Rangers Thursday that he would not be re-signed.
Jagr, 36, spent his first 11 seasons in North America with the Penguins. He was a member of their Stanley Cup-winning teams in 1991 and 1992, and ranks behind only Mario Lemieux on the team's all-time lists for goals (439), assists (640), points (1,079) and games-played (806).
Jagr played in Omsk during the lockout that wiped out the 2004-05 NHL season, and had a long-standing offer to return there.
He has 646 goals and 953 assists in 1,273 regular-season NHL games.
