One of Lernerville Speedway's most successful events takes place tonight (time trials at 7:30) when the Mid-Atlantic Champions Series (MACS) and the O'Reilly All Stars share the dirt. The Jim Shank Memorial, a 50-lap event for the late models, is a unique event because of who it honors.
Jim Shank was a huge fan of the late models and of former Lernerville and MACS champion Lynn Geisler.
"I think this is the first time I have ever seen a memorial race for a fan," said Geisler, a Hall of Fame driver.
"Jim wasn't only a fan of mine, he was a fan of racing," he continued . "He truly loved the sport and that's what is going to make this race special."
Alex Ferree leads a competitive group of local late model racers, including Keith Barbara, who won Friday at Lernerville.
The O'Reilly All Stars Sprint Cars are led by point leader Lance Dewease. Lernerville track champion Dale Blaney (1991) is only 3 points behind. Look for local favorites Ed Lynch Jr., Bob Felmlee, Rod George and Kevin Schaeffer to give the All Stars all they can handle. Tim Shaffer, another former Lernerville track champion from Aliquippa, will be driving Aaron Call's number 83.
Adam Kostelnik of McKeesport has won 11 times in 16 modified division races this season at Motordrome Speedway, nine of those in a row. And he's closing in on a racing milestone: With three races remaining, Kostelnik is only two wins away from 100 in his career.
While his win statistic is impressive, Kostelnik points out it hasn't been easy to get to this point. His lead over Bobby Shipp is only by 61 points going into tonight. "It's hard to build a big point lead when the guy chasing you finishes second all the time," he said.
He also plans to race a pure stock during the Pittsburgher 100 weekend at PPMS.
