Re-elect Turzai: The Republican works hard for the 28th District
Monday, October 06, 2008

Voters in the 28th House District will experience a collective flashback when they go to the polls Nov. 4, where the ballot will include a re-run featuring two solid candidates.

Republican Mike Turzai, 49, of Bradford Woods, is seeking his fourth term for the seat representing Bradford Woods, Franklin Park, Marshall, McCandless, Pine and Richland. His challenger is Democrat Brad Cline, 40, a Richland technology consultant who lost by a nearly 3-1 margin when he ran against Mr. Turzai in 2004.

Since then, Mr. Turzai has advanced in leadership in Harrisburg and now is chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee. The post, he said, has allowed him to bring attention, through hearings around the state, to topics including gambling regulation, health care, welfare fraud and the Port Authority.

While we strongly disagree with the House Republicans' health-care plan and are not in lock-step with Mr. Turzai on all issues, there is merit in many of his ideas.

If he had his way, state budgets would be adopted by April instead of dragging the process past the June 30 deadline, and bonuses for state employees would be eliminated by law. Like his opponent, he has favored a constitutional convention aimed at reducing the size of the Legislature. Mr. Turzai would not stop with that branch of government; he is open to merit selection of judges and, if he had his way, the state Liquor Control Board "would be gone tomorrow."

Mr. Cline, who holds a bachelor's degree from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, said he is running again out of frustration with what he calls a "lack of movement" in Harrisburg.

We part company with his call for term limits and think he is too optimistic in thinking significant property tax reduction can be achieved without raising other state taxes.

We endorsed Mr. Cline in his first race against Mr. Turzai, but supported the incumbent in 2006. Based on the growth he has shown in office and his hard work for the district, Mike Turzai deserves the Post-Gazette's endorsement for re-election.
