Getting into Oakland will be a challenge on Saturday when the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation closes Forbes Avenue and the Parkway East outbound exit ramp to Oakland from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The closing is necessary while crews pour a concrete deck -- weather permitting -- for a new Boulevard of the Allies bridge crossing Forbes.
Forbes Avenue traffic will be detoured down Brady Street to Second Avenue to Bates Street and Craft Avenue. Parkway traffic will continue outbound to the Edgewood-Swissvale interchange, where it will be circled back to the Bates Street exit to Oakland.
The restrictions are connected with the two-year-old, $29 million project to create a new "gateway" to Oakland while reconstructing the boulevard-Forbes-Fifth Avenue intersection. The boulevard bridge is expected to be finished and open to traffic around the end of November and all work should be completed by the year's end.
