One traffic fatality reported as roads get slick
Winter weather advisory in effect around Lake Erie, in mountains
Monday, November 17, 2008

A motorist from Library was killed this morning in New Stanton when he lost control of his car and crashed on a Pennsylvania Turnpike ramp, state police said.

A number of less serious accidents have been reported in the region as low temperatures and precipitation have combined to make some roads slick.

Scott E. Austin, 40, had been driving south on Toll 66 when he made a sudden turn in an attempt to exit onto a ramp to Interstate 70 in Hempfield, state police in New Stanton said.

Mr. Austin was ejected through the sun roof of the SUV he was driving as it rolled nearly two rotations.

The vehicle then landed on top of Mr. Austin, police said.

Westmoreland County Deputy Coroner John Ackerman pronounced him dead at the scene of trauma of the chest.

Investigators said the Mr. Austin had not been wearing a seat belt, and he had been driving too fast for the maneuver that caused the crash, police said.

Investigators had not determined whether the weather or road conditions contributed to the crash.

Snow has been falling in spots this morning across the region, and while it's not widespread, there can be isolated slick spots on highways around Pittsburgh.

Drivers especially should slow down on bridges and overpasses.

Travelers should be on the lookout for heavier snow that may fall today near Lake Erie and in the mountains to the east. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Erie, Crawford, Mercer, Venango, Forest, Warren, Elk, Potter and McKean counties, where 4 to 8 inches could accumulate today in some areas. In Westmoreland, Fayette, Indiana and Somerset counties, as much as 1 to 3 inches could fall.

To the south, however, drivers along Interstate 68 should exercise extreme caution. A winter storm warning from noon today to 6 p.m. tomorrow has been issued for Preston and Tucker counties in West Virginia, and Garrett County in Maryland. As much as a foot of snow may fall.
