Preservation group publishes 'endangered' list
Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Preservation Pennsylvania's latest list of endangered historic resources includes the former Schenley High School building, metal truss bridges and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The statewide historic preservation group issued the 2008 Pennsylvania At Risk list yesterday.

Pittsburgh Public Schools this year closed the Schenley building, which opened in 1916, because of costly estimates for repairs. The district moved most of the students to what had been the Reizenstein building. The preservation group calls the old building "one of Pittsburgh's most significant school buildings."

The report notes that as bridges are replaced, the number of metal truss bridges statewide is expected to decrease to 237 by the end of this year and to 184 by 2012. One of the bridges at risk is the Dorrington Road Bridge over Robinson Run in Collier.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike opened in 1940, and the news release noted that many of its original bridges, overpasses and toll plazas have disappeared. It says planned construction means that South Midway will be the only "remaining example of the turnpike's historic way stations for weary travelers."
