Heidelberg Police Chief Vernon Barkley has issued a counterfeit currency alert after five phoney $20 bills and one fake $50 bill turned up in the borough.
Chief Barkley said counterfeit bills can be detected by a different texture (you should feel ridges on authentic bills) and the portraits should be distinct. Counterfeit bills often have repeat serial numbers, their appearance is blurry and the ink is different than legal currency.
Bills of $10, $20, $50 and $100 denominations have a watermark that can be seen by holding the money up to a light. On new $5 bills that were printed beginning in March of this year, the watermark is a large number 5.
