Woman accused in FBI agent's death is jailed
Thursday, November 20, 2008

The woman charged in connection with the fatal shooting of an FBI agent is in Allegheny County Jail.

Christina Korbe, 40, of Indiana Township, was arraigned overnight on a charge of criminal homicide after she was taken to the hospital complaining of stomach pains.

FBI Agent Samuel Hicks, 33, of Richland, was killed early yesterday morning as he and a team of agents were attempting to serve a warrant on Robert Ralph Korbe, Ms. Korbe's husband. It was part of a multi-agency operation seeking 35 people wanted on drug charges.

According to a police affidavit, the officers knocked on the door and ordered Mr. Korbe, 39, to give himself up. When he refused, officers burst through the front door.

Ms. Korbe, who was upstairs with her 10-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son, didn't know what was happening, her attorney said last night. She later told police she retrieved a gun from a bedroom closet and fired a single shot down the stairway.

She said she never heard officers identify themselves as police.

But police said the Korbes knew who was at their door when law enforcement officers arrived. A police affidavit said officers knocked at the front door and when Mr. Korbe asked who was there, officers identified themselves.

"They definitely knew the police were outside," said a law enforcement official familiar with the raid. "They were talking to the guy through the door, telling him to give himself up. He refused."

The bullet hit Agent Hicks in the left collarbone above his bulletproof vest. The county medical examiner said an autopsy performed today found the agent died of a single gunshot wound of the chest, which perforated major blood vessels, including the aorta.

He was pronounced dead at UPMC St. Margaret at 6:52 a.m.

Agent Hicks, 33, was the first FBI agent to be killed in the line of duty in the Pittsburgh region.
