About Goodfellows

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Goodfellows Holiday Toy Fund, founded in 1947, is designed to do one simple thing: Make sure every child receives a toy for the holidays.

Thanks to the support and generosity of Post-Gazette readers, Goodfellows delivers more than $100,000 worth of new toys to more than 30,000 youngsters every year.

This program carries on the wonderful work of the late George Bond who, for 40 years, collected and distributed playthings to children in destitute homes and charitable institutions. The Optimist Club of Pittsburgh adopted Mr. Bond's burgeoning charity before it grew so large that the Post-Gazette became its sole sponsor. Beginning in 1999, the Post-Gazette Goodfellows and Toys for Tots have worked together to see to it that every needy child receives a toy for the holidays. Beginning in 2002, The Salvation Army joined forces to serve those in need of toys closer to their homes. The Pennsylvania Department of Welfare helps to best determine the children in need of toys.

Goodfellows does not hold fund-raising events or rely on foundation or endowment assistance. Starting every Thanksgiving, our cause is trumpeted in the pages of the Post-Gazette, asking readers to share a little holiday cheer.

Please help us deliver happiness to an area child in need and donate today!

How to make a request

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette mails a letter to each household with children under 12 who are receiving monetary assistance from the Department of Welfare. In an average year, over 10,000 letters are mailed that assist over 17,000 children. These families are asked to register with their local Salvation Army in October to be able to receive toys during the holiday season.

The Marines' Toys for Tots program also provides toys for groups who serve underprivileged children. Please call 412-672-3472 for more information about toy distribution this holiday season.
